THIS IS HOW REVOLUTIONS GET STARTED . . .

. . . this is how governments fall, this is what the beginning of movements looks like:

ELBARADEI RETURNS TO EGYPT

Amidst a third day of protests, democracy advocate Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel laureate who urged the United States to support democracy more strongly, has returned to
Egypt.

ElBaradei landed Thursday evening in Cairo, saying he returned because "it's a critical time in the life of Egypt and I have to participate with the Egyptian people."

According to the UK Guardian, ElBaradei was "thronged by people when he arrived in Cairo."

Anybody besides me remember what it was like when the Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile? -S. L.

  1. I remember. Could be some scary shit going on. Maybe freedom breaks out or maybe the Mohammedans take advantage of the chaos and take over. The clerics hold a lot of power and the Brotherhood is strong there.
I do believe Jugears will do the wrong thing. I think he is dependable that way.

  2. I haven't seen anything about US deployments. Usually we hear all about this carrier and that squadron being sent here and there. Mostly for sabre rattling PR. So the silence is a bit worrysome. Could mean nothing, but this is some serious stuff. Don't we always get worried when anything bad happens in the land of oil?

  3. I do remember 79 all to well.
I was in VA145 at Whidbey Island. We were just getting ready to start the workups for another deployment on Ranger to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. Wound up spending about five months in the IO and Arabian Sea.
    As jimmy didn't do jack.

  4. Yes, I remember. And later crewed one of the C-130s that made it back from the Desert One hostage rescue failure.

  5. I remember and I see a lot of parallels to Iran in 1979. "Popular" uprising against an entrenched ruler, feckless US President, an exiled leader returns. I have a feeling this isn't going to end any better than that one did. In fact, I blogged about it over at my place.
