- Otto von Bismark
July 31 - OAK RIDGE, TN Around 4:30 a.m., the security force at nuclear weapons plant Y-12 responded to a sensor on the PIDAS (perimeter intrusion detection and assessment system) that indicated an unauthorized entry into the so-called Protected Area, where work on nuclear warheads takes place.
As it turned out, it was not a terrorist attack, nor was the alarm tripped by a wayward deer or other critter. Instead, three aging peaceniks were hanging banners, splashing building with what they claimed was blood, and painting messages on the plant's storage facility, a $549 million fortress which contains the nation's primary supply of bomb-grade uranium.
Confronted by armed guards, the anti-nukes protesters - Megan Rice, an 82-year-old nun; Greg Boertje-Obed, 57, a housepainter and military veteran; and Michael Walli, 63, a gardener and Roman Catholic layman - began reading a prepared statement about their beliefs and opposition to nuclear weapons.
Comment
Normally I'd include some analysis here but the highly compartmented nature of nuclear security constrains me to repeating what is already in the media and the public domain. Needless to say these idiots took their lives in their hands and are alive today only because of a miracle of God.
These protestors are fools for two reasons: A) they were willing to risk their lives going up against the most benevolent superpower in the history of the world - for all its power the United States does not practice colonialism or even gunboat diplomacy; and B) even if they had died in the course of their actions would they have made the world one iota more safe a place?
If the anti-nuke crowd wants to impress me, I suggest they try to focus their operations against the real nuclear threat in this world: Iran. If they just want to make a point about nuclear safety, perhaps they could visit the nuclear storage facilities of the countries of the former Soviet Union. Or maybe a trip over to North Korea to attempt their little publicity stunt at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center, or perhaps the Chungjinsi military base and nuclear fuel storage site.
Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center, Democratic People's Republic of Korea
Step Aside, Amateurs:
The first time Scott Lunsford offered to hack into a nuclear power station, he was told it would be impossible. There was no way, the plant's owners claimed, that their critical components could be accessed from the Internet. Lunsford, a researcher for IBM's Internet Security Systems, found otherwise.
"It turned out to be one of the easiest penetration tests I'd ever done," he says. "By the first day, we had penetrated the network. Within a week, we were controlling a nuclear power plant. I thought, 'Gosh. This is a big problem.'"

IF ITs ON THE INTERNET IT MUST BE TRUE
Ann One Million sent this link: Evacuation of military installations in California asks: can this be for real? Supposed to be a taped conversation/interview on 8/6/12 - I'll let the experts in the readership handle this question . . . S.L.
MILITARY EVACUATING COASTAL BASES EXPECTS OCEANS COMING OUT OF BASINS AFTER ASTEROID
Apparently the US military are evacuating all coastal bases on the east & west coasts in expectation of the oceans coming out of their basins; you have 2 weeks to move all your gear, people - I'm 500 feet above sea level so I'm going to ride it out. All kinds of superlative intell in comments beneath the clip on YouTube; I'm not posting it here because I don't repeat other people's propaganda. All I've got to say is DRUDGE has nothing on this nor Coast to Coast AM so these guys are really ahead of the cutting edge with their intell.

NAVY SEAL FORCED OUT FOR CRITICIZING OBAMA’s POLICIES
This story actually headlined this way on Fox News:
Navy SEAL Forced to Retire for Criticizing Obama’s Policies
Carl Higbie served as a Navy SEAL for nine years, but was forced to retire after speaking out against President Obama’s policies. Higbie was threatened with dishonorable discharge for writing the book, “Battle on the Home Front,” but instead was able to simply retire.
“My commanders were more concerned about how the fallout of this book would affect their careers than they were concerned about how re-electing President Obama would affect the country,” Higbie said.
He discussed the controversy surrounding the book, saying, “It really points out how there is an agenda on Capitol Hill. It needs to be called attention to. There are so many things right now that are destroying this country.”
Comment:
OK first of all let's get it straight: NOBODY "retires" from the military after only nine years- you have to make it to 20 to earn retirement pay.
The correct term for leaving the military prior to that time - whether honorably or otherwise - is "ETS" - End of Terminal Service.
No big deal, this doesn't actually affect the story; just one of the continuing misunderstandings civilian journalists have when reporting on the military.
Analysis:
In the U.S. military we are allowed to have political freedoms, of course; our officers are not allowed to order us which candidates to vote for, which is the norm in most 3d world militaries.
We may personally express our political beliefs as private citizens. We are NOT allowed to use the uniform as some sort of political soapbox - which apparently is what this young man did.
Navy SEAL Carl Higbie set himself up for failure and the DoD was correct in showing him the door. It speaks well for Higbie's conduct during the course of his service that they chose not to administratively prosecute him - which they may have been able to do - instead they let him ETS with an Honorable Discharge.
I wish the young man well and hope he follows through and makes something of himself in the political arena; our nation is in dire need of leadership.

BIN LADEN MOVIE TRAILER: ZERO DARK THIRTY
The official teaser trailer for Katherine Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty". This is Bigelow's follow up to "The Hurt Locker" with writer Mark Boal. The film chronicles the US search and killing of Al Queda leader Osama Bin Laden. A joint combined CIA-DOD effort tracked down wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden; Seal Team 6 provided the shooters for what was a JSOC mission but inside sources have confirmed to me that on Prom Night they had adult chaperones i.e. SFOD-D.
FYI: "Zero Dark Thirty" is military for 'early in the morning - before the break of day' - I have heard and used this phrase throughout my entire career in Airborne and Special Forces units at Fort Bragg and overseas, going back to 1983; just like "Hurt Locker" is Marine Corps slang - I first became aware of this term from a couple of Recon Marines who attended my Q-Course class.
I guess now that Hollywood has co-opted these phrases we won't be able to use them anymore. Everybody will think we're taking our lines from the movies when in reality thats the way we speak. Damn. - S.L.

Success Can Breed Overstrain for Special Operations Forces
An interesting read making the rounds and generating a lot of interest amongst my SF colleagues - S.L.
By Sandra I. Erwin
They are competent beyond belief. But at what point do U.S. special operations forces become too much of a good thing?
That was one of the questions at hand during last week’s hearing of the House Armed Services Committee’s emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee.
Since the May 2011 Osama bin Laden raid, U.S. special operations forces have basked in the limelight, which is well deserved, said Rep. Ron Barber, D-Ariz., the newest HASC member who replaced Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. But the glowing publicity, in the long run, could be detrimental to SOF troops if they become the go-to guy every time the nations faces a national security challenge, Barber said. “Now everybody knows how good these folks are, and the temptation is to have them do everything because they can do whatever they put their mind to so well.”
Lawmakers ought to be worried about this, said Barber. “How do we ensure special operations stays special?”

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT & LEFT
This came across the email machine from a friend in the UK - S.L.
Subject: Origin of Left & Right
I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "Right"
and Liberals are called the "Left."
By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible:
"The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to
the left." Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)
Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.

OBAMA CAMPAIGN SUES TO RESTRICT MILITARY VOTING
by Mike Flynn at Brietbart
President Barack Obama, along with many Democrats, likes to say that, while they may disagree with the GOP on many issues related to national security, they absolutely share their admiration and dedication to members of our armed forces. Obama, in particular, enjoys being seen visiting troops and having photos taken with members of our military. So, why is his campaign and the Democrat party suing to restrict their ability to vote in the upcoming election?
On July 17th, the Obama for America Campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and the Ohio Democratic Party filed suit in OH to strike down part of that state's law governing voting by members of the military. Their suit said that part of the law is "arbitrary" with "no discernible rational basis."
Currently, Ohio allows the public to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election. Members of the military are given three extra days to do so. While the Democrats may see this as "arbitrary" and having "no discernible rational basis," I think it is entirely reasonable given the demands on servicemen and women's time and their obligations to their sworn duty.
Comment from the worthy site Blackfive:
Flynn cites the National Defense Committee which reports:
for each of the last three years, the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the President and the Congress that the number one reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote.
So here is a law actually trying to provide a little extra time to address the problem cited. Why the resistance from the Obama campaign and Democrats?
If the polls are to be believed concerning how the military is likely to vote, it wouldn’t favor Obama or the Democrats. And, of course, Ohio is a swing state. So they want no extra time allowed for the military to vote.
Mystery solved.
But hey, the military is still useful as props during photo ops and when they help burnish the C-i-C’s rep by killing bad guys like Osama. Voting? Yeah, not so much.
"We've Got Your Back"
Typical Liberal; divide people up into groups, then conquer. If you're illegal - . . . er . . . "undocumented" . . . you can vote. Photo ID is too much of a bureacratic nightmare to ask of people, so just let anybody vote, early and often. Unless you're in the military, of course. Some groups are more equal than others.
Thanks Barack. Don't do us any big favors, and don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out . . .
