War is an Ugly Thing . . .
. . . but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

My father was there with the Third Army.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was there after landing at Omaha, captured in France while operating a watercooled machine gun in some forgotten village. He was a POW for 3 months before being liberated by the British. He then went on to the South Pacific where his brother died at Camp Cabanatuan. He joined the 11th Airborn, then went to Korea when the war broke out there.

Pieper should have been hung! The ultimate war criminal. The only reason he escaped the gallows was due to the cowardice of U.S. judges to actually hang him! Furthermore, all SS members should have been executed. Adenaur's government was full of ex-Nazis and ex-SS personnel. Macht alle kaput!
