Every year for Thanksgiving we deep fry two birds here at FireBase TigerLily. This is because the first will be devoured in it's entirety - they are that delicious - so the second bird is for the leftovers.
Thanksgiving is possibly my favorite holiday for several reasons. For one thing, I have so much to be thankful for, especially during these hard times, times of so much chaos and confusion. At our holiday table I always say a special prayer for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in the combat zones overseas, for the forces of our Commonwealth Allies, and for the forces of our special ally the State of Israel.
Thanksgiving falls near my birthday, and during my favorite time of the year; fall, when the leaves turn and the great "getting in shape" weather comes.
And last but not least, Thanksgiving is the time when we respect our Original National Bird - the Noble Turkey - and then . . .
. . . WE EAT HIM ! ! !
Every year around this time my favorite modern philosopher explains to us the true story of Thanksgiving, which I paraphrase here. It is remarkable how far from the truth the meaning of this uniquely American holiday has shifted, to the widely-accepted myth involving the survival of the first independent English colony in North America, due to the generosity of the Native Americans.
What we are taught in school is that when the Pilgrims came to the New World, they didn't know how to survive as pioneers in the wilderness. They were escaping tyranny in England, but after they got here the Indians - who were eventually to be wiped out - taught them how to do everything, fed them and so forth. So after a terrible winter of starvation and death, the Indians taught them how to plant corn, and shared with them game such as deer and wild turkey. The following harvest time they had a big feast where they all sat down and thanked the Indians for saving their lives.
But that's not what really happened. The story of the First Thanksgiving is actually the story of how Socialism fails, every time its tried.
