WE WATCH FOOTBALL TO SEE THE FOOTBALLERS PLAY FOOTBALL

NBC's Bob Costas Goes On Gun Control Rant About NFL Player's Murder-Suicide

Text follows:

BOB COSTAS: Well, you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective. Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf-life since we will inevitably hear about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games. Please, those who need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportion about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.

"Our current gun culture," Whitlock wrote, "ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead."

"Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions, and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows?"

"But here," wrote Jason Whitlock," is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Oh yeah, Bob? You Liberals sure like living in the Land of If, so lets take your liberal kool-aid drinking logic and run with it here:

If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he could have wrung Kasandra Perkins neck with his bare hands, and beat her to a pulp.

If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he could have stabbed Kasandra Perkins multiple times like O.J., or beat her to death with a baseball bat.

or how about:

If Kasandra Perkins had a gun, she'd still be alive today.

The gun didn't kill Kasandra Perkins any more than the hammer built the house. The gun is a tool and it did exactly what it is designed to do. What killed Kasandra Perkins was a worthless excuse for a human being who could not control his passions and so we got what we got the other day.

What kind of a person was Jovan Belcher? What kind of character development - or lack thereof - did he have in his upbringing? What led to this total breakdown?

We've all had bad days, we've all been under stress, anxiety and pressure - and every man who's ever lived with a woman has had to put up with some kind of evil verbal abuse. But we don't all kill our women - if guns caused this kind of behavior, then women would be an endangered species.

I dunno - I have a hard time feeling sorry for the trials and tribulations of an NFL footballer. I was on the Varsity Team for twenty-five years - when I was 45 I was still on an Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha, still rolling through the desert in the back of a truck on the M249B, still humping the monster ruck, still lifting 200-round cans of .50 cal up into the back of the truck - AND my domestic life suffered through long deployments, stress and anxiety, and the pay was a fraction of what professional footballers get.

The past five years haven't been exactly a bowl full of cherries either, come to think of it. Somehow my wife - and the wives of millions of other gun owners - survived.

Riddle me this; if one G.I. kills his wife, the media starts honnking on 24/7 about how we're all Rambo, we're all ticking time bombs waiting to go off; but somehow that theme eludes us here. Instead we have The Worlds Greatest Forensic Psychologist and Bullshit Artist Bob Costas explaining to us that people don't kill people; guns kill people.

Right, uh huh. Somebody explain that to Nicole Brown Simpson.

  1. The grasp of what is...............is tenuous if not simply hanging by a thread in those two.

  2. Bob Costas owns stock in a razor-blade/rope/pesticide/toaster&tub/plastic-bag factory - that's why.

  3. Costas has sh*t for brains. And he works for a network. But I repeat myself.

The story's already coming out than Belcher was a thug all the way back to his pre-teen years on Long Island, running a gang, beating kids up, stealing bicycles, etc. Once again, the National Felony League lives up to its reputation.

  5. Here in Wisconsin...an 18 year old fellow just beat and killed a 20 year old with a BASEBALL BAT!!!!! It was over a drug deal...imagine that!?!??
Now, do we out law baseball bats? Here in Wisconsin if you are under 21 years of age; you can't buy a hand gun. So the law helped protect that 20 year old drug dealer right!???!

  6. I was enjoying watching a football game full of errors. Almost like Keystone Kops in football uniforms. At halftime I was looking forward to some shots of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Then, BAM !! A stupid, insane commentary of less than important news of the day. And on a TV event that probably had a disprportionate audience of Texans. Costas showed his ignorance and his ass. He is now irrelevant to a large group of people.

    1. Good point - and what he said had NOTHING to do with football and wasn't even during the course of an NFL broadcast. I guess now we know the difference between ESPN and NBC.
