I'm going over to a friend's house tomorrow to pull an engine block, but my friend doesn't have a hoist. No problem, I'll rig up a bamboo tripod and make a 3:1 mechanical advantage using some climbing gear.
Shorty #2 says "There's no way bamboo is strong enough to lift any kind of weight!" She says that because she doesn't know what I learned growing up in Southeast Asia . . .
BAMBOO IS STRONGER THAN STEEL...
STORMBRINGER SENDS
Please take video or lots of pics and post them. Sounds fascinating and could be very valuable knowledge for those of us without such experience.
ReplyDeleteI've seen several multi-story buildings with scaffolds composed primarily of bamboo. It's incredible stuff, and grows like a weed; several inches per day, especially if you don't WANT bamboo growing there.
DeleteIf you have unpleasant neighbors, plant bamboo along the fence line when you're ready to move out. They will never get rid of it.
Agree with ccbpc ...
ReplyDeleteYou can build just about anything with Bamboo, Paracord and Duct tape.

Bamboo is FAR stronger than steel - in COMPRESSION. It's pretty good in tension, but not so hot on shear forces. It WILL break. The key is to have enough bamboo so that at least some of the structural members are in compression to balance the shear loads.
ReplyDeleteTo Anon @ 12:39AM; Paracord is great in tension, has NO shear or compressive strength. Duct tape is pretty good in shear, and only so-so in tension; no compressive strength. So with these three materials, you're pretty well covered, as long as you have a LOT of duct tape.
