I give almost all of my charitable donations to the Salvation Army. If you read "Goodbye Darkness" by William Manchester in the first 5 pages you can get an appreciation of what they do. My father told a similar story about his days in New Guinea in WWII. When they came out of the jungle with almost nothing but their rifles and gear the Red Cross was there with soap and razors. The Red Cross wanted the guys to pay for the stuff. No Red Cross for me.

THAT'S FUNNY BECAUSE MY FATHER SAID WHILE IN GERMANY (WWII) IT WAS THE SALVATION ARMY THAT HELPED HIM AND MY MOTHER WHO WAS GERMAN. TO THIS DAY I ONLY SUPPORT THE RED BUCKET.

You need to check your info.
ReplyDeleteAnother bogus Internet email rumor. If you want to check out how much of each dollar is spent on Administration and Fundraising (AFR), the Combined Federal Campaign has an annual booklet, for each region where the CFC is administered, that lists all eligible charities taking part in the CFC and shows how much of each dollar is spent on AFR. That way you can get a decent idea of how much goes toward the actual charity work. One such booklet, for the DC area is available here:

If you look at an organization like the Salvation Army, under the all of the listings for Salvation Army, you will note there are multiple listings for local, national and worldwide branches and that the amount spent on AFR varies from one to the other considerably. There is an index showing all pages on which the Salvation Army is listed. The AFR runs from about 3.5% up to 21% for various branches of the Salvation Army. It pays to be aware of things like this when giving to a charity or one of its branches.
All the best,
Glenn B
Thank you for sharing this valuable info.

Forgot to add AMVETS to the list.
ReplyDeleteMy grampa, while in the Army during WWII, had a dislike for the red cross. They where told the red cross was supposed to give out free coffee and smokes to all the guys. Him and what few of his company left, coming off the beaches, went to the tent and where told they didnt have smokes, only cigs. Shortly after some officers came in and where given coffee and cigs. Only officers where given the cigs! It caused a big stink amongst the foot soldiers. He never gave a penny to the red cross and had nothing good to say about them.
ReplyDeleteThe use of many organizations is a good idea as well.
ReplyDeleteNone of the above stuff about non profits it true, but you barely need get off your butt to find the actual facts. Go to Charity Navigator, or pull any non-profits tax forms from Foundationcenter.org (990 finder). Most non-profits also release their audited financials, check their websites.
ReplyDeleteAll of the above is from several bogus emails that have been circulating for years. Complete fiction in many cases.
