Last week the Supreme Court heard the case of United States vs Alvarez - whether a federal law that makes it a crime to lie about receiving military medals or honors violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of the right to free speech - as far as I know they haven't voted on the thing yet. What follows is the story that led up to this case. - S.L.
Exposer in Stolen Valor case fired
Xavier Alvarez claimed to be a Marine veteran and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Remarkably, her is seen here wearing a US Army uniform with Special Forces acoutrements. Typical phony wannabe can't keep his story straight. -S.L.
On a tour bus trip to Southern California Edison’s Big Creek power plant, event planner Melissa Campbell was passing out snacks to dignitaries when one of them asked her a question that would change both of their lives and make U.S. judicial history.
“Do you know who I am?” asked Xavier Alvarez, an elected member of a local water board, not waiting for an answer.
“I am a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.”
Nearly five years later, Mr. Alvarez, who never served in the military, stands among dozens who have been convicted under the federal Stolen Valor Act, a misdemeanor crime that carries a sentence of up to one year of imprisonment for lying about receiving military honors. After Mr. Alvarez’s appeal, his widely publicized case recently went before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Less attention has been paid to the fate of the woman who helped expose Mr. Alvarez and who brought him to the attention of the FBI. Ms. Campbell, the event planner serving Mr. Alvarez snacks on June 27, 2007, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served her country for 10 years.
But after exposing Mr. Alvarez’s medal claim as a hoax — later reporting to the FBI what she viewed as a crime in progress — Ms. Campbell said she wasn’t thanked by her employer.
Instead, she said, she was fired.
This is utterly shameful - read the whole thing HERE

She sounds (and looks) like real class...bless her heart! Wish we had more like her.
ReplyDeleteThis is utterly shameful. An honest, decent citizen is fired for reporting a crime? The Medal of Honour is your highest award for gallantry and I have no doubt that here in the UK we would take a similar view of anybody falsely claiming the VC/GC or GM. It reflects highly upon Ms Campbell's honour that she has rejected the siren calls of the lawyers to claim compensation. How do you compensate the removal of honour from a deeply honourable individual? It appears the "management" of her late employers may wish to explain and justify their actions to a selection of Veterans. "Unprofessional to confront him?" an individual engaged in a criminal act? No, Sir, VERY professional Mr Alvarez dishonoured the holders of the Medal of Honour and the Nation he purported to serve.
