A READER WRITES:

"I just got an FNAR (7.62 NATO) rifle and am looking to scope it up. I am not a thousand-yard shooter, more realistically 300-500 yards (I only have access to a 300 yard range anyway)."

The FNAR tactical / sniper rifle was first introduced to shooting, public in 2008. It is a product of the famous Belgian company FN Herstal - Fabrique Nationale.

The FNAR rifle is based on the popular FN / Browning BAR hunting rifle (no relation to the original Browning BAR M1918 rifle of World War II fame).


"Any advice on a good scope? The FNAR has Picatinny rails for the mounts."

My advice: In most cases a good scope will cost more than the gun, for the money a Leupold is hard to beat. I recommend the Leupold Mark 4 LRT 3.5 X 10. This is a Long Range Tactical scope - the difference between this and a hunting scope is the tactical scope has ballistic compensation on the turret so you can adjust for range without having to unscrew the elevation knobs and break out the screwdrivers.


"Is this fairly easy to scope up myself if I order 30 mm Picatinny scope mounts? Or should I have a gunsmith mount it up?

How would you recommend initial sighting? I have seen these bore lasers, but they seemed to be a bit gimmicky, and I didn’t see how they would really reflect well at distance.

Also, where should I sight in order to use the mil dots for elevation – 100 yards?"

You ought to be able to slap that scope on yourself no problem - it doesn't take a gunsmith, it is a simple operation you could do on the countertop at a gunshop, or anywhere for that matter. A trick with the Pickatinny rails: when you're pulling one optic off and slapping another on as mission changes (what the rails are designed for) - mark the side of the rail with a bit of paint so you always remember where your scope goes.

The bore lasers work. I once zeroed a USN Mark 12 Mod 0 SPR with a bore laser over 30 meters in a hanger because there was no testfire range available then took it out on mission and hit centermass at 300 meters. I would still prefer to zero on a range, any day.

Zero your optics for 300 meters and you'll be good for lesser distances. The technical data for ballistics (characteristics of climb, etc) should be in the literature for the weapon. Generally, the round climbs and then drops down, crossing the line of sight twice (once on the way up, at about 50 meters, and then going down, at about 450 meters).

Then you will be ready for the belltower.

FIGHTER GENIUS COLONEL JOHN BOYD


A defense contractor once sent its top aircraft designer to meet with Boyd during early planning for what would become the F-16. The man brought aerodynamic estimates for a plane that Boyd quickly recognized as bogus.

Boyd studied the figures, leaned over the charts and said, "I can extrapolate this thing back to where the wing has zero lift. Wow. This airplane is so good that not only does it have zero lift, it has negative drag. . . . If this thing has negative drag, that means it has thrust without turning on the engines. That means when it is on the ramp with all that thrust, even with the engine turned off, you got to tie the . . . thing down or it will take off by itself.''

Boyd ended the conversation: The "airplane is made out of balonium.''

The USAF expects its mid-level officers to have an advanced degree, but when the education assignment came to Capt. Boyd, he opted instead for another undergraduate degree, in industrial engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. It was in Atlanta, as a 35-year-old captain and father of five (the eldest, like Boyd's sister, had been crippled by polio), that he was asked what a fighter pilot did. The questioner was Charles Cooper, a student in aeronautical engineering, little more than half Boyd's age. They were classmates in thermodynamics, so Boyd explained that just as mechanical energy could be transformed into electrical energy - by a generator - so could a pilot transform higher altitude into greater speed, or either one into maneuverability.



'Then it hit me, Jesus Christ, wait a minute! I can look at air-to-air combat in terms of energy relationships. I can lay out equations. I can do it formally now.' He spent the rest of the night laying out the equations, and when he was done he had the basis for would become known as Energy Maneuverability, or E-M.

During the Korean War, as suggested by one of the E-M charts created by Boyd at Eglin Air Force Base, the American F-86 was outclassed in almost every respect by its adversary, the Russian-built MiG-15. Nevertheless the F-86 was credited with a 10-1 victory ratio in air-to-air combat, an anomaly that Boyd would explain through his formulation of the OODA Loop.


When he took up his assignment at the Pentagon, Boyd soon determined that the Air Force was about to commit many millions of dollars to the design of a fighter aircraft that his E-M calculations showed would be `overweight and underwinged, too complex, and far too expensive'.20 With his acolytes - who were mostly civilian employees -he sweated the behemoth down to a plane whose empty weight was less than half what the Pentagon had intended.

`Boyd's E-M theory', writes Jarmo Lindbergh, `made it possible for the first time in fighter design history to analyze the whole maneuvering envelope of a fighter still in design and even prior to the first flight of the prototype.' Taken into service as the F-15 Eagle, the new fighter would serve as America's air superiority weapon for more than thirty years.

Boyd's group, by now called the Fighter Mafia, followed up with an even lighter and cheaper plane, the F-16 `Fighting Falcon'. Edward Luttwak has complained that scientists and engineers seldom support the development of `diverse second-best equipment', even though that may the best policy.

The light and comparatively cheap F-16 was just such an acquisition. (`Cheap', of course, is a relative concept, especially when it comes to Pentagon procure. The F-16 cost $10 million per copy.) It proved an ideal all-purpose fighter bomber, and by 2008--35 years after its debut--it served in the inventory of twenty-five air forces around the world. Among its admirers was the Dutch scholar-pilot Frans Osinga, who would write the definitive study of Boyd's intellectual journey. Colonel Osinga remembers the plane as `wonderfully agile. I was first trained as an F-5 pilot and the transition to the F-16 was just mindblowing.'

Unique to the aircraft was a thrust-to-weight ratio so great that its pilot could `dump' speed in an increasingly tight turn, thus forcing a pursuer to shoot past him; then he could accelerate so quickly that the F-16 was now the attacker. This trick became known as the `buttonhook turn', and the F-16 as `the most maneuverable fighter ever designed'

GURU of WAR JOHN BOYD


A fighter pilot without any combat kills becomes the most influential military strategist of our time? OK, so he's a fighter jock with a brain . . . his ability to quantify dogfights (and everything else) into measurable theory became the major influence of what is modern maneuver warfare doctrine.

During the early 1960s, Boyd, together with Thomas Christie, a civilian mathematician, created the Energy-Maneuverability, or E-M, theory of aerial combat. A legendary maverick by reputation, Boyd was said to have "stolen" the computer time to do the millions of calculations necessary to prove the theory, but it became the world standard for the design of fighter planes.

A popular anecdote credits Boyd for largely developing the strategy for the invasion of Iraq in the first Gulf War. In 1981 Boyd had presented his briefing, Patterns of Conflict, to Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney, then a member of the United States House of Representatives. By 1990 Boyd had moved to Florida because of declining health, but Cheney called him back to work on the plans for Operation Desert Storm. Boyd had substantial influence on the ultimate "left hook" design of the plan.

In a letter to the editor of Inside the Pentagon, former Commandant of the Marine Corps General Charles C. Krulak is quoted as saying "The Iraqi army collapsed morally and intellectually under the onslaught of American and Coalition forces. John Boyd was an architect of that victory as surely as if he'd commanded a fighter wing or a maneuver division in the desert."



The OODA Loop

Boyd's key concept was that of the decision cycle or OODA Loop, the process by which an entity (either an individual or an organization) reacts to an event. According to this idea, the key to victory is to be able to create situations wherein one can make appropriate decisions more quickly than one's opponent. The construct was originally a theory of achieving success in air-to-air combat, developed out of Boyd's Energy-Maneuverability theory and his observations on air combat between MiGs and F-86s in Korea. Harry Hillaker (chief designer of the F-16) said of the OODA theory, "Time is the dominant parameter. The pilot who goes through the OODA cycle in the shortest time prevails because his opponent is caught responding to situations that have already changed."

Boyd hypothesized that all intelligent organisms and organizations undergo a continuous cycle of interaction with their environment. Boyd breaks this cycle down to four interrelated and overlapping processes through which one cycles continuously:
• Observation: the collection of data by means of the senses
• Orientation: the analysis and synthesis of data to form one's current mental perspective
• Decision: the determination of a course of action based on one's current mental perspective
• Action: the physical playing-out of decisions

This decision cycle is thus known as the OODA loop. Boyd emphasized that this decision cycle is the central mechanism enabling adaptation (apart from natural selection) and is therefore critical to survival.

Boyd theorized that large organizations such as corporations, governments, or militaries possessed a hierarchy of OODA loops at tactical, grand-tactical (operational art), and strategic levels. In addition, he stated that most effective organizations have a highly decentralized chain of command that utilizes objective-driven orders, or directive control, rather than method-driven orders in order to harness the mental capacity and creative abilities of individual commanders at each level.

In 2003, this power to the edge concept took the form of a DOD publication "Power to the Edge: Command . . . Control . . . in the Information Age" by Dr. David S. Alberts and Richard E. Hayes. Boyd argued that such a structure creates a flexible "organic whole" that is quicker to adapt to rapidly changing situations. He noted, however, that any such highly decentralized organization would necessitate a high degree of mutual trust and a common outlook that came from prior shared experiences. Headquarters needs to know that the troops are perfectly capable of forming a good plan for taking a specific objective, and the troops need to know that Headquarters does not direct them to achieve certain objectives without good reason.

In 2007, strategy writer Robert Greene discussed the loop in a post called OODA and You. He insisted that it was "deeply relevant to any kind of competitive environment: business, politics, sports, even the struggle of organisms to survive", and claimed to have been initially "struck by its brilliance".

Elements of warfare

Boyd divided warfare into three distinct elements:
• Moral Warfare: the destruction of the enemy's will to win, via alienation from allies (or potential allies) and internal fragmentation. Ideally resulting in the "dissolution of the moral bonds that permit an organic whole [organization] to exist." (i.e., breaking down the mutual trust and common outlook mentioned in the paragraph above.)
• Mental Warfare: the distortion of the enemy's perception of reality through disinformation, ambiguous posturing, and/or severing of the communication/information infrastructure.
• Physical Warfare: the destruction of the enemy's physical resources such as weapons, people, and logistical assets.

Maneuver warfare and the Marines

In January 1980 Boyd gave his briefing Patterns of Conflict at the Marines AWS (Amphibious Warfare School). This led to the instructor at the time, Michael Wyly, and Boyd changing the curriculum, with the blessing of General Trainor. Trainor later asked Wyly to write a new tactics manual for the Marines. Wyly then went on, with Lind and others, guided by General Alfred M. Gray, Jr. to write FMFM 1 (Warfighting). Wyly, Lind, and a few other junior officers are credited with developing concepts for what would become the Marine model of maneuver warfare.

Wyly, along with Pierre Sprey, Ray Leopold, Franklin 'Chuck' Spinney, Jim Burton, and Tom Christie were described by writer Coram as Boyd's Acolytes, a group who, in various ways and forms, promoted and disseminated Boyd's ideas throughout the modern military and defense establishment.

600 NITRO EXPRESS PISTOL

This video is basically a "show and tell" of a custom built Thompson Encore (fancy version of the Thompson Contender).


The Caliber . . . 600 Nitro Express.

That's right . . . an elephant gun round in a handgun - or rather; a handgun built around an elephant round.


The story goes that the guy who built it is some kind of custom gunsmith, and built this as an exhibition piece.

He takes it to the range with him just to show it off, and the big guy in the video bugged the gun maker to let him shoot it.

Until only recently, the 600 Nitro Express was hands down the biggest, meanest nastiest, hardest hitting, and heaviest recoil weapon you could buy.

It was designed for one simple purpose . . . to knock an elephant flat on its ass . . . consider this: the 600 Nitro Express round can go clean through a 1/2" steel plate at 35 feet like a hot knife through butter.

This specialized handgun was really built as an exhibition piece for guys "compensating" . . .

The 600 Nitro Express cartridge is known for breaking collarbones, arms, shoulders . . . of the shooter!

In the gun world they use what is termed "recoil index" to measure what kind of kick to expect out of a gun.

A 30-06 has a rating of 1.0, which for many people is about the limit of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably.

A 243 BR is rated at about 0.4, a 270 is about a 0.8, etc.

The 600 Nitro Express is rated at 9.4.

9.4 times more punishing power than a 30-06.

Las Vegas Boy Dies After Getting Stranded in Death Valley

It all started as a fun camping trip 1 August for a mother and her young son, an adventure in the desert. The warning signs came early, a flat tire, but they changed it and continued to drive on - not considering they now had no spare - they also had no maps, compasses, or signalling devices (no cell phone coverage way out there in Death Valley). After the second breakdown, 24 16-oz. bottles of water, Pop Tarts and cheese sandwiches didn't last too long.

The average summer temperature in Death Valley National Park, a vast and desolate area along the California-Nevada border that is considered one of the hottest places on Earth, is well over 100 degrees.

The Desert will kill you with boring regularity, if you let it. They recovered the mother last Thursday, the 5th. She told them her son had died the day before.

I've been to the Mojave Desert just on the edge of Death Valley; the place is called that for a reason. I've also soldiered down on the Mexican border. The Sonora Desert of Arizona and New Mexico kills at least one person a day; immigrants trying to make their way across on foot.

Out in the Sahara, and over to Sinai and Kuwait, I've recorded temperatures as high as 120 degrees in the cab of the truck. In the desert, I always considered the survival kit to include the truck, and part of that included not one but at the very least TWO spare tires. Plus a double load of fuel, in five gallon cans. Plus a double load of water, in five gallon cans. Signaling is a challenge; it goes without saying that cell phones don't work that far away from the repeater towers.

One of the scariest times I had in North Africa was the time I took a wrong turn and strayed off track; by the time I did a map check, we were over a hundred miles from the track. If you break down on track, no problem - someone will roll by sooner or later. If you break down OFF track, now you are in a survival situation. I knew it was serious when Muhammed my guide started saying his prayers, as we rolled along at one mile-an-hour, with tires deflated to make it through the powder-like moon dust.

Mother Nature is the Boss.

I arrived today & made linkup with an old friend, my mentor actually; I'll refer to him as Sensei - he taught me the art & science of surgical explosive breaching operations . . . another lifetime ago, back in Okinawa. That's his totally customized '08 Springer Softail (I'm driving the Mustang) There's a LOT of horsepower in that baby! -eat your heart out Theo =D

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away another mentor of mine, an old retired Green Beret, full-blooded Ute Indian who made Sergeant Major - explained to me that after retirement, for him the word adventure involved fast cars and motel rooms . . .
