THEY NEVER TRULY DIE AS LONG AS WE REMEMBER . . .

German Panther moves into the Bulge as lines of US POWs mile's long are marched eastward. DEC 1944

70 years ago at this very moment there were thousands of American guys running and fighting for their lives as they tried to withstand Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (or what became known as the Battle of the Bulge). It was the largest battle American forces have ever been committed to, it was the greatest loss of American life in any single battle, and it lasted 6 weeks. Here are just the American casualties:

Killed in Action 10,276
Wounded in Action 47,493
Missing in Action 23,218
Total for 6 weeks of battle: 80,987

  1. A minor point; I think the vehicle is a Tiger 2 ( AKA King Tiger) which probably made zip-all difference to the GIs pictured, or to PFC Martin for that matter.

  2. My late dad was there also with Co. K of the 325th GIR. Does anyone know if PFC Martin survived the War?

  3. Two of those wounded were:
    PFC James P. Godsey
    PFC Joseph H. Hostnick
I knew them as Uncle Jim and my father-in-law Joe.
Both made it home and lived full lives. RIP
