U.S. Army 2009 solicitation for a M24 reconfiguration




The U.S. Army put out a solicitation in May 2009 for reconfiguring M24 Sniper Weapon Systems currently available in Army inventory consisting of a:

* Rebarreling/rechambering the SWS's barrel optimized to accommodate Mk 248 (DODIC A191) .300 Winchester Magnum ammunition.

* Replacement of existing weaver rails with a MIL-STD-1913 rail capable of accommodating both a day optic and in-line forward mounted, AN/PVS-26 (NSN 5855-01-538-8121) image intensified (I2) night vision device.

* Reconfiguring the stock with a stock that incorporates a detachable box magazine, adjustable comb and length of pull.

* Addition of a detachable sound suppressor as well as any necessary barrel modifications required for a sound suppressor interface.

* Replacement of the existing day optic sight (DOS) and rings with an Army specified variable power day optic and compatible rings.

The U.S. Sniper's More Accurate, Quieter Rifle

For snipers, every war is different. Recognizing the differences between conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army is now selecting a contractor to upgrade the 22-year-old Remington bolt-action rifle to become a more effective killing machine. The Army will pour about $5.6 million into upgrades to the M24, with the new gear expected to be delivered to troops by this fall. The M24's barrel is being modified to shoot heavier .300 Winchester Magnum rounds, instead of the 7.62mm NATO ammunition, which should extend the rifle's maximum effective range by hundreds of yards to a maximum of about 1400 yards. The suppressor will reduce the noise and flash of the gun so snipers can stay in their hiding positions much longer after they fire.

Mystery Rocket Explodes in Jordan

A rocket has exploded near the southern Jordanian city of Aqaba, damaging a warehouse but causing no casualties.

The rocket was one of two fired early on Thursday which landed in Jordanian territory - the other fell into the Red Sea.

There are conflicting reports as to where the rockets were launched.

Iran is increasing its paramilitary Qods force operatives in Venezuela while covertly continuing supplies of weapons and explosives to Taliban and other insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to the Pentagon's first report to Congress on Tehran's military.

The report on Iranian military power provides new details on the group known formally as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), the Islamist shock troops deployed around the world to advance Iranian interests. The unit is aligned with terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, North Africa and Latin America, and the report warns that U.S. forces are likely to battle the Iranian paramilitaries in the future.

Intel has confirmed that the cartels along the Southern California border have recruited members of the San Diego area, Logan Heights Street Gang for narcotics, weapons and human smuggling.

How long will it be before we began see this kind of weaponry along the San Diego and Imperial County border, or right on the streets of the border towns and cities?

BUTTERMILK BISCUITS

Every now and then I whup up some chow for the troops. It's been awhile since I cooked a meal for a battalion but I've thrown down for some company-sized formations a couple times since then. Tonight I'm prepping some chow - sausage biscuits from scratch - to throw at a platoon before we go out and do an ambush, tomorrow morning.

Normally I'd be slamming some beers when I cook, but because we're handling weapons within 12 hours that makes it a no go. Yes, we are still Stateside and yes, it is training. Doesn't make any difference - can't show up with booze on your breath and handle the M240B; those days are long gone. Train the way you fight, fight the way you train.

Al Qaeda to attack US from Mexico with Bio weapons

U.S. counterterrorism officials have authenticated this video of Kuwaiti dissident and al Qaeda recruiter Abdullah al-Nafisi threatening to smuggle anthrax into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border.

The video makes clear that al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times.
