WHOA - NAVY PA STEPS ON IT

From MichaleYonOnline:

US Navy image with GPS data embedded

Military photographers sometimes forget to turn off the camera GPS. The Navy caption for this electric image is found on Flickr:

Lightning flashes near USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (Nov. 19, 2012) Flashes of lighting are seen over the horizon as the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) operates in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. Dwight D. Eisenhower is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom. Conventional military hammerheads have no idea of operational security and even less situational awareness - the squidly-diddley O-2 operating this camera is displaying obvious tendencies of the entire FaceBook Generation. More details on this brainfart faux pas and some good imagery HERE

  1. Kind of hard to project power if no one knows where you are. It's got to be hard to hide a carrier strike group anyways.
Yon has turned into a bit of a schmeckel.
    My opinion, of course.

  3. Minor detail but just for fun, Navy Lt = O-3, Ltjg = O-2.

  4. You know what really gives away the ship's position? The fact that US carriers almost always operate with the AIS system active when in the Gulf.

This is a complete nothingburger, and Yon is again trying to find crisis where there is none.

  5. OK you guys are right - and yes it did occur to me that its pretty hard to hide a Nimitz class carrier in the Gulf . . . and yes I know a Navy LT is an O-3 or at least I used to know - I messed up here - serves me right for posting Yon's Disinformation.

  6. I'll give Yon the tiniest bit of credit. It would be a good idea for PAOs to routinely strip out the metadata from all released pics.

  7. Only two types of ships in the navy; submarines and targets.
